Your Sun Sign's Element Decides Its Stone — Here's the Chart
Western astrology groups the 12 signs into four classical elements — fire, earth, air and water — three signs each. Our Birth Chart tool follows that grouping, renaming air to metal, to recommend a color and material per sign, plus a fifth, wood-element bonus for Sagittarius and Pisces, whose entry in the source catalogue doubles up.
This is a different system from birthstone-by-month, and worth keeping separate in your head. Birthstone-by-month cares only which calendar month you were born in. What follows here is older: the four classical elements Western astrology has assigned to the zodiac signs for centuries, grouped three signs to an element. It's also, directly, the system behind the "what to wear" answer on our own Birth Chart tool's Western tab — not a separate theory, the actual mechanism.
The four classical elements
Every sign in the zodiac belongs to exactly one of four elements, and this grouping is centuries old and consistent across Western astrological traditions: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Fire signs are read as driven and assertive; earth as grounded and practical; air as communicative and mental; water as emotional and intuitive. Our tool inherits this exact grouping — see the table below — with one substitution and one addition, both explained after it.

Why "metal" instead of "air", and why two signs get a bonus row
The substitution and the extra row both come from the same source: this catalogue layers a five-element system — wood, fire, earth, metal, water, the wuxing framework used throughout our Five Elements (bazi) chart — onto a zodiac that only has four elements. Air becomes metal because wuxing has no air category to map it to. Wood has no equivalent zodiac element at all, so rather than leave it unused, the source catalogue attaches it to the two mutable signs that already sit elsewhere on the wheel — Sagittarius (fire) and Pisces (water) — giving each of them a second, wood-flavored entry alongside their primary one. It's a deliberate design choice we've kept rather than corrected, and it's the reason those two signs alone return two groups of colors and materials instead of one.
The pearl overlap
Water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — already point to pearl in the table above, which happens to be the one organic gemstone actually in Revoulou's own collection (see our colored-gemstone field guide for why pearl needs gentler handling than a hard stone). If your sign is one of the three, the algorithm's suggestion and what's actually for sale here are the same material, not a coincidence worth reading too much into, but a genuine overlap.
