Which Stone Holds Up to Everyday Wear
For a piece you never take off, moissanite and lab-grown diamond both hold up indefinitely; cubic zirconia does not, and softens visibly after a few years. But the stone is rarely what fails first. On a daily-worn ring, the plating wears and the prongs loosen long before anything happens to a hard stone — so setting style matters more than the last fraction of a Mohs point.
Good for everyday wear gets used loosely. It is worth separating into three things that fail at different rates: the stone, the setting, and the finish on the metal.
The stone
Hardness on the Mohs scale measures resistance to scratching, and the number that matters in daily life is 7 — the hardness of quartz. Ordinary dust contains quartz particles, which is why anything below 7 gradually loses its polish just from being handled and wiped.
Moissanite at 9.25 and diamond at 10 are both far above that threshold and are, for practical purposes, permanent. Cubic zirconia at 8 to 8.5 is also above it, and this is where the confusion comes from: on paper CZ looks durable enough. What the number doesn't capture is that CZ's facet edges are comparatively brittle and abrade with repeated small contact. The stone doesn't scratch all over; the crisp junctions between facets round off, and a rounded facet edge returns less light. That is the mechanism behind the familiar observation that a CZ goes cloudy after a few years — it isn't cloudiness, it is lost crispness.
The setting
This is what usually fails first, on any stone. Prongs are thin metal holding something hard, and every knock against a doorframe or a countertop moves them slightly. Over a few years a prong can lift enough that the stone sits loose or catches on knitwear.
For a piece that stays on, a bezel — metal wrapped around the girdle of the stone — is materially more secure than prongs, because there is no thin projection to bend. A channel or a flush setting behaves similarly. Pave sits in between: individually small stones are well protected by the surrounding metal, but there are many more settings to fail, so a lost stone is a more common failure than on a solitaire.
The finish
On plated pieces, the plating is the shortest-lived component by a wide margin. Gold plate over sterling silver wears at contact points — the underside of a ring shank, the back of a bracelet — where friction is constant. How long it lasts depends on the thickness of the layer, your skin chemistry, and how often the piece meets soap and water.
Solid metal doesn't have this problem, but sterling silver has its own: it tarnishes, forming silver sulfide on the surface in reaction with the air. That is reversible with a polishing cloth, and it is worth knowing the difference — tarnish is a surface film you remove, plating loss is material that is gone.

Choosing by how you'll wear it
If a piece stays on through washing up, the gym and sleep, choose a hard stone in a bezel and accept that plating is a consumable. If it comes off at the door, cubic zirconia is a perfectly reasonable choice and lets you buy a bolder design for the same money. Most people own some of each, and the mistake is not picking the cheaper stone — it is putting the cheaper stone in the piece that never comes off.
